As far as German SUVs go, few have the notoriety of the BMW X5. While its new-found American character may have lost it some favour with buyers, it is still undoubtedly one of the most important vehicles BMW ever made.
We already know that the next generation is on the way from the numerous sighting of prototypes that have popped up all over the world. However, BMW Blog has learned just when we’ll get to meet this handsome new agricultural vehicle.
According to them, production of the current E70 model will end in July 2013. A month after that, they will switch to the newer F15 X5 model, which will be shipped from the Spartanburg in the US to all over the world.
Knowing BMW like we do, we believe this actually means a reveal at the Geneva Motor Show to give them a few months to wind up the marketing machine and show it at events all over the world.
Reports indicate the new X5 will have an aluminium body that will help it shed some 150 kilos or 330 pounds. This reduction means that for the first time, a 2-lifer TwinPower Turbo engine will be available.
Cosmetically, we find it looks a bit like a vertically challenged 5-Series. Certainly, that makes it a bit more boring than a Bangle-era design, but given the success of the 5er, that’s not a bad thing.
