At £35,900, we think it's surprisingly good value, and we're not just saying that because there are no direct rivals at this moment. You can still think of this as a direct competitor to the JCW Countryman, but consider the differences in power and performance.

While the MINI's 2-liter makes 230 horsepower, the fiery Spanish car is making 300 PS and 400 Nm. It's officially rated at 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and 153 miles per hour flat-out. So while you might not be able to convince the wife that you need a Golf R, this could be the next best thing.

Of course, that kind of performance wouldn't be possible without the standard seven-speed DSG and 4Matic AWD. That's not something a MINI JCW will offer without options.

Compared to the standard Ateca, this Cupra is naturally more sporty-looking. It features body styling, exclusive diamond cut alloy wheels, glossy black exterior details and striking new copper Cupra logo and lettering. Inside, you are treated to the leather steering wheel and Alcantara seats, keyless access and 8-inch infotainment like in the Leon.

For another £1,930, you can have the Cupra Ateca Comfort & Sound with the safety pack (Traffic sign recognition, Lane assist, High beam assist), a small spare wheel, electric trunk, Beats audio and heated seats. Add another £3,345, and the Cupra Design pack includes Brembo brakes, 19-inch copper wheels, and some interior bits.

Separate options are also available, expensive ones like the £1,600 bucket seats or the £1,040 panoramic sunroof with added ambient lighting. Still, these are cheaper options than you'd see on most 300 horsepower cars, especially if they are SUVs.
