Cummins Diesel Engine of 2016 Nissan Titan XD is a Technological Showcase

Challenging the full-size pickup truck segment with a bold take on everything, the 2016 Nissan Titan is the type of workhorse to really get excited about. It isn’t as enticing a proposition as the 450 HP 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor dune warrior, but the right Titan model offers a very hard to ignore overall package.

Boiled down to the utmost important details, here’s what really cool about the all-new Nissan Titan - the XD. We’re not sure if Nissan marketing people have decided to name the most potent Titan variation XD after the Internet slang for LOL (laughing out loud), but the numbers are in and power is in the numbers.

Without further beating around the bush, the 2016 Nissan Titan XD Crew Cab like the yellow one we saw live at the Detroit Auto Show can be had with the 5.0 Cummins V8. Impressive as is, but did you know that the 310 HP and 555 lb-ft (752 Nm) on hand enable the truck to tow more than 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg) and claim a heftier payload than 2,000 lbs (907 kg)?

As if that wasn’t impressive enough for a light-duty pickup truck, the Titan XD Crew Cab with the 5-liter Cummins V8 turbo diesel pickup promises “the fuel-efficiency and affordability of a half-ton pickup.” Of course, the heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin automatic is a vital element for such capability, but the 5-liter turbo diesel V8 from Cummins is the other vital highlight.

Enhanced by an M2 two-stage turbo system, the 5 point 0 isn’t a true twin-turbo motor, but one that’s benefitting from sequential turbocharging from two differently sized chargers: a big and a small turbo. If you’re curious about how how the series sequential turbocharging system works, you’re in for a treat.

As simply put as possible, the small turbocharger is there to provide grunt for low air flow requirements, while the bigger force feeding unit kicks in at higher rpm for seamless thrust from idle to redline.
