Cummins Diesel Drift Miata Waiting for Your Funding to Roll Coal Sideways in 2016

When placing “Miata” and “Canada” in the same sentence, stereotype fans might be tempted to think of a rather peaceful canyon drive. However, we are here to bring you a Canadian Miata project that promises to... roll coal all over North America next year.

We’re talking about the Cummins Drift Miata. While this oil-burning, sideways-going Mazda currently lives in the imagination of a crew called Pistonhead Productions, the team has taken to crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in order to make the project happen.

The car, a 1990 MX-5 Miata, is already in their garage, while they’re preparing to receive a Cummins 4BT diesel. Despite this, and the team having already arranged with a few names in the tuning industry to receive a number of key components, they explain extra funding is still required.

Before you point out that the typical four-cylinder Cummins only delivers 105 hp and 265 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque, we’ll mention the team wants to tune the engine. They talk about touching the fuel pump and injectors, as well as raising the rev limit.

The plan includes a number of parts LS1 Miata swap fans are familiar with, while a Ford T19 4-speed tranny, as well as a Ford 8.8 rear end (with a 410 final drive) are also on the list.

The crew is aware of a notion called “weight distribution” and they’ll try to compensate for the 800 lb mass of the 4BT powerplant. While the trunk will accommodate a hefty part of the cooling system, the fuel cell replacing the tank will also be mounted as back as possible.

The big plan is to complete the build in 48 hours or less - for now, we get the rendering above. If the project gets funded, the car (we decided to call it Cummiata) will enter drifting events across North America next year and then the monstrosity will be raffled. All the proceeds are set to go to the Huntsville High School, where car aficionados are born with the help of special training programs.

At the time of writing this article, the team had managed to raise 24 percent of their $10,000CAD ($7.500 US or EUR7,100) goal, after a 12-day online presence. With 48 days left, they might just end up building “a beast of a tire slayer to take to events all over North America.

Since attempting to drift a short-wheelbase, nose-heavy Mazda sounds like fun, here’s to hoping we’ll meet this Canadian contraption in 2016.
