Set to appear on the center stage in Detroit in a couple of hours, the BMW i8 was caught completely undisguised in the beautiful Crystal White paint somewhere around Leipzig, where the CFRP used in its construction is made.
Apparently, a lot of BMW test cars (this is a test car too) are being spotted all around Germany these days, especially in cities where the Bavarians have manufacturing plants. If we know Germans as we think we do, that’s because they want to make sure every possible problem is discovered and solved before the cars hit reach you.
As for the i8 you should know that if you want to own a hybrid sports car that does 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and has a fuel efficiency of just 2.5 l/100 km (94 mpg) you’ll have to pay in excess of $135,000 if you live in the US.
That price tag will get you a sub 1.5 tone car that has 362 HP and 570 Nm of torque coming out of two motors. One is sourced from the i3 and has 131 HP (hooked up to a two stage transmission) and 250 Nm of torque and one is a traditional, internal combustion unit with 231 HP and 320 Nm of torque hooked up to a brand new 6-speed automatic gearbox.
