The BMW i8 fascinated minds ever since the Germans unveiled the original Vision concept in one way or another. As a matter of fact, the production car ended up looking a lot like the concept and that’s something we (and a lot of the other people in the industry) didn’t see coming at all.
Don’t think for a moment that we’re complaining though. Oh no, on the contrary, we applaud BMW for taking this bold approach and today, we’re admiring their creation on a set of special Forgiato Wheels.

In an earlier comparison with a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, the reviewer said that the BMW could’ve used a little more grip and some wider tires. That’s an issue a lot of the people driving the car pointed out. While we have a logical explanation as to why the Germans decided to go with skinny rubbers, we can’t help think how much the performance of the hybrid would change if it was offered some proper gear.

These wheels from Forgiato sure look better than anything BMW is offering for the i8 but they are just for show. When it comes down to pure numbers, things tend to go the other way around.

That’s because the original ones were created so that they are light, cut through the air and have a sall contact patch with the road, to reduce road friction to a minimum. Coupled with the electric motor on board and the internal combustion engine, they allow the i8 to achieve numbers never before thought possible for a car that does 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds.

MPG ratings go up to 121 according to the Germans and that translates into 2.1 l/100 km if you’re more accustomed to the European way of doing things. That’s a fraction of what a similarly fast car would eat up normally, something like the Audi R8 for example.

362 HP are nothing to joke about, especially when powering a car that tips the scale at under 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs) and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque? That basically demands some proper tires! While we let BMW simmer on that issue (and hope that at least one reviewer gets some wider wheels and better rubber on the i8) you can enjoy our photo gallery of the i8 sitting on some nice 22” Forgiato Fondare-ECL wheels with matching black accents.
