One of the most successful lines of models launched in recent years by Chevrolet, the Cruze is about to expand, as you already know, with the addition of the hatchback version sometime in 2011. The model, which has already been previewed at the Paris Auto Show earlier this year, presented today its production version shape, thanks to a set of sketches snatched soon after GM trademarked the design.
The overall look of the production version will pretty much be the same as in the concept, with a sweeping roofline and short overhangs at both the front and the rear. To be built on a body-frame integral system (BFI) and with the use of a custom-tuned chassis, the hatch will offer 400 liters of luggage space.
The Cruze will be launched in 2011 with the same engine range as the sedan. That means that buyers can opt between two petrol units (1.6l/113 hp and 112.8 lb-ft of torque, 1.8l/141 hp and 129.8 lb-ft. of torque) and a diesel (2.0l/150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque).
"Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets. The total compact segment in Europe represents around 4.8 million units which is over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks representing around 65% of that volume,” said Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe, back in September when the new model was presented for the first time.
“We therefore expect to see increased business in a number of regions, while sending out a signal that Chevrolet is now a serious mainstream player in Europe."
