Cruze Eco Gets 42 Mpg, Dominates Competition

The Chevrolet Cruze Eco topped the competition with its super-efficient 1.4-liter Turbo engine mated to a six speed manual transmission, claiming a 42/28 (5.6/8.4 L/100 km) rating for highway and city mileage. That's 2 mpg more than GM initially estimated for the current leader of the compact sedan segment.

The Cruze has a full aero package (air dam, rear spoiler and a flattened underbody), as well as a lowered ride height and low rolling resistance Goodyear tires wrapped around 17 inch wheels. The overall weight of the car was reduced by thinning sheet metal in select components or reducing weld flanges' length. As a result, aerodynamic drag was reduced by 10 percent over a non-Eco model and weight was reduced from 3,223 pounds (1,461 kg) of the Cruze 1LT to 3,009 pounds (1,364 kg).

We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director. “Our engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.

The Ecotec 1.4L turbo has a power output of 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque (200 Nm). The wide rpm range for the maximum torque helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance.

Cruze Eco's highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors, as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models.

Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Russell. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.
