Craigslist is an interesting website and reminds us of how things used to look on the Internet in the late 90s. From the same era, we discovered what the seller claims to be the “Ultimate B5 Audi A4 Sedan.”
Looking into the ad, we discovered a heavily modified 1997 Audi A4, from the B5 generation. The car has a clean title, a manual transmission and a quattro four-wheel-drive system. We also learn that the model left the factory as a 1.8 T quattro 5-Speed Audi A4, and that the seller swapped in a V6 2.7 Turbo motor from a 2000 Audi S4, complete with drivetrain, interior and wiring harness.
The car’s chassis has 110,000 miles on it and the S4 motor has covered 140,000 miles, according to the seller. The mods didn’t end here, as the ad notes the V6 engine was fitted with a set of Audi RS6 turbos and the body equipped with an RS4 (period-matching) widebody kit.
The widebody conversion was done in 2006 with OEM parts and repainted in the factory color, Aluminum Silver Metallic. The roof was then painted black to match the carbon fiber hood.
The owner claims that he planned to make the utimate B5 series Audi A4 in the world, ready for autocross and track events. However, the car has a standard S4 interior and a clean title, so the new owner could drive it on the street. If they pay the seller $30,000 and pick up the car in the Chicago area, that is.
Since the owner wanted to run the car at trackdays, the A/C system has been removed and so has the stereo system, but the parts are still in his posession so they can be refitted by the new posessor.
But all is not fine and dandy with this custom “RS4 Widebody,” as the seller himself admits in the ad. According to the unnamed vendor, the car still needs some attention. The engine goes into limp mode “after some run time,” an issue that the seller thinks is caused by a faulty Oxygen sensor (Lambda plug) or an exhaust gas temperature sensor. Either way, the man claims these parts could either be replaced or coded out (probably at the buyer’s expense). The situation also causes an uneven idle, but the owner states that he pressure tested the system and everything is sealed, so there’s nothing wrong with the vacuum seals or piping.
There are also a few scratches on the car, as seen in the pics provided in the Craigslist ad.
