Couple Travel Longest Driven Journey with a Toyota Land Cruiser: 692,000 km and Counting

They first made it in the Guinness World Record books in 1997, when their journey along the globe was first registered. Since then, what was supposed to be a two-year road trip turned into a way of life as Emil and Lilian Schmid have never looked back. Started in 1984, they traveled across 180 countries in the same Toyota Land Cruiser. Believe it or not, they are still on the road.

One day Emil goes to his wife and says he wants to travel for some time and he’d like her to join him in what could be a an adventure worth going through. It all started when they shipped their Toyota Land Cruiser from Iceland to New York. It was 1984 when the couple from Switzerland would leave on what was supposed to be a two-year trip touring North America.

After that they headed to South America and then on to Africa, Australia, Asia and back to Europe. And we’re only looking at their first 10 years of travel. Long miles have followed and now, 30 years later, they are still hitting the road currently road tripping in South Africa. They did stumbled upon some technical problems with the car, when the old off-roader was sidelines with a broken axle. A local Land Cruiser club is already helping them out, so soon enough new updates should be posted on their website.

Be advised, the webpage was most likely created a long time ago and it seems to be using an old interface, but with a bit of patience you’ll be checking their latest adventures.

Over 430,000 miles and 180 countries covered

As to the what their home was for the past 3 decades, according to Road Trippers (and Guinness World Records for that matter), it actually was the 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 60.

Sure, there were some custom features applied, such as a 5lb propane tank, a jerry can for water and a makeshift bed. It appears they are also carrying some proper gear any travelers need on the road, things like a table and chairs, pressure cooker, water purifier and the classic mosquito net.

Most of their adventures were blogged, taped and photographed so if you want to properly look into it we recommend spending some time on their website. In specs, last time Guinness noted - 16 July 2014 - their journey was counting 692,227 km (430,130 miles) and implied 180 countries in the same Toyota land Cruiser.
