Shame on me for not seeing this earlier, but you know how they say “Better now than never.” Andy Smith and Emma Smart are currently on a huge trip around the world using an 18-years old Toyota Hilux.
A 1995 Toyota Hilux Surf, to be exactly. The model was sold mainly in Japan, with large numbers exported as used vehicles to Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. The original model was just a Toyota Hilux pickup with a fiberglass shell over the bed.
The 1995 Hilux Surf gained a full steel integrated body, new coil sprung rear suspension and some minor design changes. It was mostly sold in five-door configuration with a range of diesel engine, including a 2.4- and a 3-liter turbodiesel.
The couple has already gone through Scandinavia, Russia and Mongolia, now being situated in Africa. Their trip also in include occasional stops to help out charity organizations along the way.
