This is not a reason to despair though. The embarrassing names of some roads in UK will be changed following discussions in Lewes District Council, in East Sussex, The Daily Mail reported. In order to avoid double entendres and place names that might offend, the Council's Cabinet is expected to reach a final decision on first street naming and numbering policy very soon. This means awkward sounding names like Gaswork Road, Tip House and Coalpit Lane will be banned.
There is also a category of names which are “capable of deliberate misinterpretation like Hoare Road, Typple Avenue, Quare Street, Corfe Close (4 Corfe Close) etc”.
The Council Cabinet added: “Street names which could give offence are not used, nor are names which encourage defacing name plates.”
Yet, names such as Juggs Road and Cockshut Road may be allowed to remain after all.
A surprising as it may seem, people seem to have got used to the names or may just have an extremely developed sense of humor. Again, some people prove their resistance to changes.
“I would hate for the name to change. It has some history. I can see with political correctness why the council would not want these sort of names but it is a pity,” former councillor Rachel Powell, of Cockshut Road, confessed.
However, this is not the first time when councillors banned a road from having an “aesthetically unsuitable” name as in August last year, it banned a road named The Fighting Cocks.
It seems that each road name has its own history. For instance, there is a town where cock fights took place in the 1800s on a regular basis. A pub called “The Fighting Cocks” was created in this town, but the Council thought it was rude to call the road like this.
