Coulthard: Rosberg Will Not Match Schumacher at Mercedes

Former Grand Prix driver and F1 race winner David Coulthard said that Michael Schumacher will undoubtedly become the leader of the new Mercedes GP team in the upcoming season, but ruled out recent rumors that the German manufacturer will hand the 41-year old the No 1 status within the Brackley garage.

Writing in his usual Telegraph column about how things are going to work in the Mercedes GP team through the 2010 campaign, DC argued that Rosberg will not be able to maintain the same level of competitiveness against Schuey throughout the entire 2010 season. However, he did not rule out a surprising campaign from Rosberg, as the young German has nothing to lose in his attempt for greatness in F1.

I just don't think he (Rosberg) will be able to match Michael's levels of consistency. I have some sympathy for Nico Rosberg, but then this is a chance for him to really step up and be the hero himself. (...) I have no doubts that he (Rosberg) will receive equal treatment,” wrote DC in his column.

Remembering some stuff from his 9-year stint with McLaren Mercedes in the late '90s and early 2000s, Coulthard revealed some interesting details about how Mercedes used to choose the driver to benefit from their fresh power plants.

Mercedes used to flip a coin to decide which of us got the fresh engine,” remembered DC.

In some of our recent reports, it was revealed that the Scottish driver will do a test with Mercedes-Benz' factory team in the DTM, somewhere around next month. However, there is still no news about a potential campaign in the German series for DC.
