BMW and Pininfarina collaborated this year to bring a new model to the world, at the 2013 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. After they unveiled the one-off car, car enthusiasts all over the world started giving it all kinds of subtle meanings.
The most recent rumor about the Gran Lusso Coupe is that BMW will use it to revive the beloved 8 Series that was the company's luxury coupe exponent and rival for the S Class-based CL model from Mercedes-Benz.
No matter how ridiculous it might sound, they might actually have a point. Despite what most people think, the Gran Lusso Coupe was based on the 7 Series platform and not the 6er's. Furthermore, it even shares the engine with the 760i, a V12 6-liter 536 HP beast.
Not to mention that, in the current trend of occupying every possible niche, BMW has yet to reveal a rival for the Merc's CL, that is currently undisputed in the luxury coupe segment.
The 8 Series was built between 1989 and 1999 and everyone loved its design that is strikingly similar to the Gran Lusso Coupe, having the same distinctive swept-back silhouette and long hood, heavily raked screens, shallow glass house, a cabin positioned well back within a comparatively long wheelbase and a short trunk lid.
According to an inside source for Automotive News, BMW wants to send out the message that the future is not necessarily all about EV's but also traditional models with real emotional appeal, like the 8er used to be. And what's more traditional than a good old fashioned 6-liter V12?
