Could Oprah Save the Struggling Auto Industry?

If there is someone in this world who could help the struggling American automotive industry these days, that person is definitely the American television presenter, media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey... or at least this is the opinion of the journalists from freep.com.

Although the Big Three's CEOs visited Washington several times and Obama sent his auto task force to Detroit last week to find out more details about the dying auto industry, so far it is not clear whether the American automakers will get additional loans or not.

"They have done a better job of making it clear they are about to go out of business than how they will prosper and survive with these loans," said Mike Murphy, a native Detroiter and longtime GOP strategist who has been involved in political campaigns.

But since each cause must have its leader, there are some voices who believe that Oprah Winfrey should be the chosen one.

"It's not a bad idea," said Jason Vines, longtime PR executive who has held major positions at Ford, Chrysler, Nissan and other places.

The idea of having Oprah as the leader of the Big Three rescue team sounds truly tempting as she isn't connected to any auto company, supplier or dealer group and she is not believed to assume the responsibility for money, fame or glory for the simple reason that she has got all of them.

So far, no one has asked her whether she wants to take the role or not but taking into consideration that Time magazine has ranked her as the most powerful on the planet, she is believed to be able to be the perfect leader of opinion favoring the dying auto industry. So, will she be the "savior" of the Detroit-based automakers?
