Could BMW Make a Formula 1 Return?

More and more journalists are wondering if BMW could make a possible return to Formula 1, at least as an engine manufacturer if not as a complete team. The recent rumors were fueled by a statement coming from none other than Gian Carlo Minardi, former F1 Team Owner.

On his official website, the Italian said that “rumors in Germany suggest BMW's board of directors will meet in May to evaluate a return to the top category to be an engine supplier as early as 2015.”

That was enough to get people going and the rumor mill running. That and the new regulations in Formula 1, of course, the ones related to the new V6 rules.

As far as BMW’s official stand goes, though, the Germans are firm on their position, claiming that no such return will happen too soon, not even as an engine provider.

"Our focus has not changed. Formula one is not a topic for us as we are very happy in production car racing," spokesman Jorg Kottmeier told Speed Week related to the latest suppositions.

However, the new rules that allows and forces teams at the same time to use turbochargers could entice BMW to make a comeback as they have been known to be successful with this kind of technology, their efforts even leading Nelson Piquet to the top spot on the podium back in 1983 with his Brabham-BMW car.

Furthermore, such an endeavor would allow any manufacturer to then use the newly researched technology inside their modern road cars along the way. Oh, not to mention the fact that BMW would, once again, be going up against Mercedes straight-on, as the Svabians have been uncontested lately.

Could this be related to the Rolls-Royce fleet of automobiles put at the disposal of Jenson Button for this year? Maybe. Maybe not, but what if BMW is already looking for a driver for their endeavor?
