The 2016 European Car of the Year nominees are in and seven models will head to the next phase of the competition.
European Car of the Year is the most prestigious distinction awarded by automotive journalists in this region of the world. This time, four premium cars and three volume cars are battling it out in order to get a shot at the 2016 title, awarded at the Geneva Motor Show.

Without further ado, the three volume cars on the nominees list are the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, the Mazda MX-5 and the Skoda Superb. The other four nominees are the Audi A4, the BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XE, and the Volvo XC90.

The selected models will again be tested by European Car of the Year jurors to establish the list of finalists. The winner will be announced on the eve of the 2016 Geneva Auto Show, set to take place on February 29, 2016. If you’re watching this with your fingers crossed, we’ll have you know that the precise time of the announcement is 3:00 pm (Geneva time).

Out of over 40 vehicles eligible for this year’s edition, 33 were left out for various reasons. The most surprising models being left out were the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the Tesla Model X, the Toyota Mirai and the Ford Mustang. Some cars, like the Toyota Mirai, were cut out of the short list because they aren’t for sale in sufficient markets by the end of the year (five markets minimum). The Tesla Model X and the Alfa Romeo Giulia also fail to meet this regulation.

Europe's Car of the Year for 2015 is the Volkswagen Passat. The German midsize sedan was followed by the Citroen C4 Cactus and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The 2014 edition was won by the all-new Peugeot 308, while the MY 2013 Volkswagen Golf won that year’s edition.

Regarding the 2016 European Car of the Year, we’re still not betting on any specific model. While we’re almost certain that a premium car will not receive the title, the jurors could still surprise us.
