Copenhagen Gets 400 BMW i3 EVs to Improve Interconnected Mobility

Life-quality, car sharing, interconnected mobility, all these and plenty other modern transportation notions may sound all serious and perhaps even far away, but they are not. The German automaker knows that and wants to expand its i sub-brand into places that already have adopted new means of getting by in the city.

A while ago we were telling you about BMW’s vision towards the future of mobility in urban areas. We mentioned the Group’s Center of Urban Mobility Competence that is working with cities and the relevant stakeholders to develop sustainable concepts for future mobility in urban areas.

Maybe all these sounded a lot like PR talks, so we figured there’s a need for a couple of examples. Here’s what BMW just announced:

Following the successful introduction of the BMW i3 to the DriveNow fleets in Germany, the UK and the USA, the next major step is being taken with the commissioning of 400 BMW i3 in Copenhagen on September 3rd 2015. What is new here is an all-electric fleet that is also interconnected with public transport. The future-oriented business model stands for even more targeted orientation of individual mobility towards the needs of people in metropolitan regions.

Their plan is as simple as successful it may prove to turn out: for people to start living their lives in a sustainable way, they first need to get a taste of it. In BMW’s scenario, that means drivers need to experience their i3 electric city car without necessarily having to buy one. Then, there’s the fact that interconnected mobility will also allow motorists to switch from a car to the public transport and all back again. Less traffic means fewer emissions in cities, and this leads to a better quality of life.

To make the wheels spin, they partnered up with the Danish branch of the British Arriva PLC, the largest bus operator in Copenhagen. Therefore, BMW’s next major step is being taken with the commissioning of 400 BMW i3 in Denmark’s capital city on September 3rd. Feel free to look into the details in the press release below.
