The first post-Clarkson season of Top Gear ended in shambles with main host Chris Evans quitting the job after a not so favorable reception from the public.
Following up after the Clarkson, Hammond, and May trio was always going to be a tough job, but Evans didn't make it any easier on himself. He kept yelling his lines throughout the episodes of the show's 23rd season, mimicking a false enthusiasm and, generally speaking, making us cringe every time he came on. It wasn't all bad, but by the end of it, it was all too late: the reflex was there so every time Evans came on, we grabbed the remote and turned the volume down. Some of us even changed the channel.
But the short-lived presenter is now gone and so the speculations about who will take his place are ripe. For most of the time, it looked like Matt LeBlanc, the American actor who was nothing short of a revelation (perhaps also helped by Chris Evans' ineptitude) was the main contender, and he even admitted to being interested in the job, but nothing is set at the moment. Talking to a US show and quoted by The Mirror, LeBlanc said: “I’d like to [be the main host of Top Gear next season]. There’s nothing officially happening yet."
The British publication claims that another well-known media figure is eying the spot left vacant by Evans' departure. His name is James Martin, and he might be less popular among petrolheads, and more so among housewives. And that's because he's made his fame hosting cooking shows, with him being a chef and all.
However, if Gordon Ramsay is anything to go by, it looks like British cooks also double as petrolheads, and James Martin is no exception. Not only does he own an impressive collection of cars - including two Ferrari Daytonas, three Formula One cars and - but he's also quite fond of driving them. Talking to The Mirror, he described how it all started: “I have two passions, cars, and cooking. I’ve been into cars ever since I was a small boy growing up in Yorkshire."
“At first, it was toy cars, but the bug really bit the first time I was allowed to drive the tractor on our farm. [...] After that there was no holding me back. I saved my pocket money and eventually had enough to buy an old Mini – £20 it cost. I was still too young to drive on the roads, so I painted some flames on the side and spent my time rallying it around the farm.”
Sources close to the media outlet claim that Martin was actually quite upset his name wasn't considered way back after the three presenters had left the show, but he doesn't hold a grudge. Actually, he'd more than gladly take the job if presented, so go to YouTube and get yourself familiarized with the possible next Top Gear host. Look on the bright side: he can't possibly be any worse than Evans.
