Convertible Next Generation Toyota Supra Might Come True

For those liking to feel the wind in their hair, the fourth generation Toyota Supra was also offered with a pop-out targa roof. Guys that saw the first Fast and Furious movie know what we’re talking about here - turn the handle, push upwards and you can see the sky.

However, the fifth generation Supra seems to be on its way now and this time Toyota might offer a fully convertible version. At least, that’s what chief engineer Tetsuya Tada told Drive Australia last week at the 24 hours Nurburgring race, along with some other interesting things.

Mr. Tada said that the company is still focused on placing three sportscars on the market. We have the GT 86 already and two more cars will join pack soon, out of which one will be a convertible.

"Our final goal [is that] we want to do three sports models from Toyota and at least one convertible model will be realistic."

According to what Tada-san said next, the GT 86 convertible plan hasn’t been ditched yet, but modifying the car to sell it now will cost too much to be a feasible project. And since we still have no clear word about Toyota’s small sportscar, the next Supra might be the one to come by as a convertible.

Since the next Supra is in the works, Toyota can underpin its structure to accommodate a convertible version from the beginning. Mr. Tada also said the FT-1 is just the first of a multiple-design study series that will eventually draw the final form of the production sportscar, with a mid-engined model also being considered.

"FT-One is the first of the design studies and there are no technical or mechanical requirements yet," he said.”We will make this more clear in the future."
