Earlier reports about an upcoming convertible RC F will come true at this year’s LA Auto Show, as Lexus just teased this open top silhouette called the LF-C2 concept.
The name follows the 2004 LF-C (Lexus Future-Concept), which featured a retractable hardtop that was allowing for coupe, convertible, targa or speedster configurations thanks to a 4-position glass roof.

It was packed with features like LED taillamps, suede bucket seats, a 3D instrument panel, drive-by-wire and retractable rear-view cameras instead of side mirrors as well as a rear bumper mounted one. Interesting how these features were only present on Sci-fi concept cars 10 years ago and today you can get them on an entry level luxury car.

The LF-C2 teaser photo doesn’t reveal much. It is indeed a convertible coupe, which also has a small lump at the back when in open top mode, which is a nice feature because it doesn’t make the car look like a bathtub with a windshield as it happens with many convertibles of today and from the past.

How could it turn out

The rear seats could be very impractical, but what concerns us the most is how much the production version will weight. The Lexus RC F now tips the scales at 3,958 lb (1,795 kg), which is 428 lb (194 kg) heavier than its main rival, the BMW M4. Adding a metal folding roof could increase it’s weight over 4,400 lb (2,000 kg).

Maybe the lower-spec RC 350 will make more sense with a drop top, since it shaves the extra weight coming from the beefy V8 and the complex differential at the back.

Positioning in the lineup? Since the Lexus RC is basically the coupe version of the new IS sedan, you can consider the RC convertible a replacement for the IS C, especially if it comes with a metal folding roof.

The new concept will be unveiled at a press conference scheduled at 1:40 p.m. on November 19th at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show in the brand’s display located in the South Hall of the LA Convention Center. Simultaneously, you can see the reveal through a 72-hour online media campaign here.

PS: don't bother playing with the image's brightness. We did that and revealed nothing...
