The “tire manufacturer of the year” announced that its tires with polyester yarn made from recycled PET bottles are now available to purchase throughout Europe.
German automotive parts manufacturer Continental introduced its ContiRe.Tex technology last fall, which, along with other notable achievements, brought the company the title of “tire manufacturer of the year” for 2022. More than 20 journalists and leading tire industry experts were in the jury.

This technology uses high-performance polyester yarn obtained from used PET bottles for the manufacturing of the tires. Continental ensures that no intermediate chemical steps are used in the process, which makes the method both eco-friendly and also more efficient.

It was the ContiRe.Tex technology that helped Continental came up with the GreenConcept tire, which was first introduced at the 2021 IAA Mobility event. In addition to using 35 percent renewable materials, such as natural rubber from dandelions, resins, and vegetable oils, the GreenConcept also uses 17 percent recycled materials such as reclaimed steel, recovered carbon black, and the aforementioned polyester yarn, which is used for the tire’s casing, in what the German company calls an industry first. This new type of material can completely replace conventional polyester in the tire carcass.

Continental specifies that a set of standard passenger car tires uses the material from around 40 recycled PET bottles, with all of the bottles coming from regions without a closed recycling loop. There are a lot of benefits to using this type of polyester yarn, with the textile cords from the PET bottles absorbing the forces of the tire’s internal pressure. The tires are reliable and remain dimensionally stable at high temperatures and under high loads.

Right now, Continental offers three models of tires made from recycled PET bottles: the PremiumContact 6, the EcoContact 6, and the AllSeasonContact. All of them are available to all dealers in Europe. Tires manufactured using the ContiRe.Tex technology have a “Contains Recycled Material” (CRM) logo on the sidewall.
