Tire and automotive parts German manufacturer Continental officially enters the electric motor markets, with its CONTI eBIKE SYSTEM, a complete electric mobility solution for e-bicycles and pedelecs. The prototyped assemblies have been introduced in 2013, and after multiple development and refinement stages, the system is almost ready to start shipping.
The CONTI eBIKE SYSTEM is a complete electric drive solution which comprises a mid-motor, display, control unit and a battery pack. The system can be easily implemented by bicycle and pedelec manufacturers with minimal changes needed to accommodate it. Slotted as a premium electric mobility solution, the CONTI eBIKE SYSTEM is lighter and more powerful than what customers can usually get in specialized stores in the same class, and the motor can be integrated into the very frame of the two-wheeler.

With a weight of only 3.4 kg (7.5 lb), the motor is surely not going to add too much to the mass of the bike, while its mid-ship mounting will also provide centralized mass. The batteries for the CONTI eBIKE SYSTEM can be installed on the lower tube, or on a special rear rack, while the display is easy to integrate in the center of the handlebar. A wired remote control unit can be installed on either side of the bars, providing easy access to the command buttons.

The first versions of the system will be compatible with gear hubs such as Shimano Nexus/Alfine, NuVinci 360, NuVinci Harmony, and SRAM G8, as well as with pinion drives, Bosch G2, and freewheel cassette. The system uses toothed belts instead of chains, furthermore reducing the weight and providing excellent jump-over protection, while reducing wear on the bike components.

The first systems are scheduled to hit the stores in spring 2015. Continental adds that the CONTI eBIKE SYSTEM is maintenance-free and can also be customized, with multiple motor power ratings and battery capacities.
