Contera MD1 Is a Barn-Made Supercar with Up to 600 HP

There’s little that can’t be done when you’re truly passionate about something. Living proof in this regard are two guys that are so into cars that they built their own supercar. We’re talking about David Halford and Michail Papastergiou, the creators of Contera MD1.

Looking at the video done by The BHP Project, you’d get the feeling that you’re dealing with some crazy people, looking to experiment and make a quick buck off of your back. However, listen to them talk about cars and you’ll soon realize that they are simply just passionate about their work.

Michail was in charge of the design while David was the one that took care of the technical bits. The whole car was created from the bottom up around the central driving position, a là McLaren F1. The guys loved the way 1980s Group C race cars looked like and wanted one that had the same wraparound type of windscreen.

That led to the cockpit looking like it does, with three seats instead of four and a driver that sits right in the middle of it all, to have perfect visibility.

Under the bonnet (or better said under the boot lid cover) lies a Lexus/Yamaha 3.0-liter TwinTurbo engine making 300 HP and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, with a redline of 7,100 RPM. While it might seem like it’s a little underpowered, the car's output can go up to 600 HP if the customer wishes so, thanks to some tuning done by the company.

Furthermore, you can add a different gearbox if you can afford it, like one from Porsche for example. That’s because the car was intended to be modular like that. The engine bay is designed in such a way that it can accommodate any plant, from a V6 to a V12 with ease.

In the end, the guys pulled it off and created a car that can be driven daily and on the track for a proper price tag: £55,000 ($81,000 or €75,290). That’s not a lot in Europe, but it is pretty steep by American standards.

For 80 grand you can get yourself anything from a Corvette Stingray to a Hellcat and even a Viper if you really want to (in this case you’ll have to add a couple grand to the total but it would be worth it). Therefore, the guys might have a case in the UK with their ride but it definitely won’t work in other parts of the world. Too bad because their creation is looking good by all means and seems to be created by truly dedicated people.
