Consumer Reports Test BMW in America, the 2013 X1

Because BMW will not sell the 1 Series hatchback in America, the cheapest car they sell theres is the X1. This sports activity vehicle was launched last year and everybody is trying to make heads or tails of it, customers, magazines and maybe even BMW.
That's because the X1 is built on the previous-generation 3 Series platform and isn't a full SUV. It was designed and engineered originally only for the European market, where it's actually doing quite well, being the top-selling premium SUV there last time we checked.

However, as an American market model, it's not perfect. Consumer Reports' tests suggest it's too expensive, not that well equipped or built considering what you pay. The they tested was a mildly trimmed xDrive28i. While costing almost $40,000 it doesn't come with a very necessary reversing camera or navigation, which really boggles the mind.

The way we see it, the problem here is the engine. While the N20 makes the X1 a performer, most models sold in Europe are sold with cheaper, less powerful diesel units.

We agree with most of what they're saying, but most of its don't actually surpass it in interior build quality.
