MMA fighter Conor McGregor is a lot of things and not all of them are non-controversial. Among those that are not is the fact that he’s an avid watch collector and that, unlike many of his peers, his tastes verge on the subdued, the sophisticated and the very exclusive.
Given his flamboyant personality and general lack of a filter, one would be excused for assuming McGregor is as much of a watch collector as boxer Floyd Mayweather is, or other flashy celebrities who don’t throw punches for a living. This isn’t the case: McGregor too likes his watches with a high number of carats, but flashiness is not what he’s looking for in them.
The latest example of his fine taste in elegant timepieces comes from his most recent acquisition: a limited-edition, very rare Patek Phillippe Annual Calender Cronograph. This particular watch in this particular shade of vibrant green, Ref. 5905P, was launched in April 2019 in only 25 examples. The launch marked the 150th anniversary of Weir & Sons, and the 50th anniversary of their partnership with Patek Phillippe.
The vibrant green on the dial and the matching alligator strap are meant as a homage to Weir & Sons’ native Ireland and the color scheme on their early watch boxes. The special-edition watch comes with a case of pure platinum, housing the self-winding CH 28-520 QA 42H movement with a 45-hour reserve, and a sapphire glass backcase that allows an unobstructed view at the mechanism. Functions include hour and minutes, an annual calendar complication and the chronograph that gives it its name.
From McGregor’s social media, it seems he was able to track down number 12 of the 25 pieces made, and purchase it for an estimated $100,000. He specifically sought out this item as a tribute to his Proper 12 whiskey brand, which somehow makes his choice even more inspired.
He calls the watch #TheHulk, which is as accurate a comparison as referring to grass by the same name. Both are green, but this is where all comparisons stops. Unlike the Marvel superhero, there is nothing brutish or brash about this Patek Philippe.
