2014 will see the introduction of the new generation of hardtop MINIs, ranging from the One and One D models up to the Cooper and Cooper S variants and, later on, the hardcore John Cooper Works model.
The full specs of all the cars (excepting the JCW) were revealed in full, as they are preparing to meet their first customers. We’ll start off with the MINI One.

Fitted with a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine making 102 HP and 180 Nm, when hooked up to a manual 6-speed gearbox, the new hardtop will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.9 seconds and has a top speed of 195 km/h (121 mph). Combined fuel consumption is now officially rated at 4.6-4.7 l/100 km (51.1 mpg to 50 mpg) for the manual.

If you decide to go with the automatic version, the 0-62 mph sprint will be slower by 0.3 seconds and the fuel consumption will go up to 4.8-4.9 l/100 km (49 - 48 mpg) while CO2 emissions will stay put at 124 grams per km, abiding EU6 regulations.

Moving on to the One D, we find a bigger engine, with the same 3-cylinder configuration. The 1.5-liter unit makes use of the full potential of BMW’s TwinPower technology and develops 95 HP and 220 Nm of torque. Thanks to a DIN weight of 1,115 kg (2,458 lbs) the combined fuel consumption is rated at 3.4 to 3.5 l/100 km (69.1 - 67.2 mpg) with a manual 6-speed gearbox.

However, you shouldn’t expect this diesel to be terribly sporty. It was conceived to be as economical and eco-friendly as possible releasing only around 89 to 92 g of CO2 into the atmosphere for each kilometer. That also means the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint is done in 11 seconds.

Going over the bigger, more powerful models, we’ll start with the Cooper D that uses a 1.5-liter diesel engine making 116 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque, weighs 1,135 kg (2500 lbs) and does 62 mph in just 9.2 seconds, no matter if you’re using the manual 6-speed gearbox or the automatic. Fuel consumption is rated at a combined 67 mpg for the manual and 63 mpg for the automatic. Both are EU6 compliant.

The MINI Cooper uses the same configuration but on petrol. It’s engine makes 136 HP and 220 Nm (230 with overboost) and can be hooked up to 6-speed automatic and manual gearboxes. With the manual, it will do 62 mph in 7.9 seconds and it will be 0.1 seconds faster with the automatic.

Fuel consumption is rated at a combined 52.2 mpg for the manual and 50 mpg for the automatic. Since the fuel tank can take up to 10 gallons you’ll probably be set for around 500 miles (800 km) on a full tank.

The Cooper S is definitely the most desirable model of the bunch, coming with the first ever 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine ever to be put on a MINI. The powerplant makes 192 HP and 280 Nm (300 Nm with overboost) of torque and, as all the other, can be hooked up to a manual or automatic 6-speed gearbox.

When fitted with the former, it will do 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 6.8 seconds, whilst the auto is 0.1 seconds quicker. The biggest difference between the two is observable in the fuel consumption area where the auto will do 44.3 miles to the gallon whilst the manual is capable only of 41.2 mpg on average.
