The all-electric Coda Sedan is an impressive little car, which will undoubtedly gain a loyal band of followers, after staying on the market, and ‘maturing’ for a while. However, one key aspect in all prospective car buyers’ minds is safety, and if it can’t deliver there, it will be off their shortlist, no matter how good it is at everything else.
The NHTSA has recently re-tested the Coda, after having done so previously, but without doing a side impact test, as the EV had faulty side and curtain airbags. Now, with all the boxes checked, the Coda got a decent overall score of four stars, but it failed to achieve the maximum score due to a poor showing in the frontal impact test, where it only managed to get a lowly two stars.

Apparently, the driver dummy recorded very chance of injuries resulting from sudden deceleration, despite the fact that looking at the video, we can see that the A-pillar does not bend, the airbags deploy as expected, and the overall structure of the car seems pretty stable. Still, with a four-star rating, the car will still sell, but the fact that it did not get the maximum score will most likely deter a lot of potential buyers.
