Back in March, we found out that Dutch designer and coachbuilder Niels van Roij had already selected the next project that would mesmerize or appall an entire world (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, remember). It was yet another Prancing Horse after the Ferrari Breadvan Hommage, and it’s probably going to be just as polarizing when complete.
But you can’t argue with the desire and imagination of such artists, especially when their creations are so intricately and lovingly turned from ideas into reality. As such, we can only contemplate what Niels van Roij Design is doing with the Ferrari Daytona Shooting Brake Tribute. Luckily, as the coachbuilder continues to work on the one-off homage project, we’re also allowed a quick peek into the elaborate and delicate process of creation.
As such, after a few months ago we only glimpsed at the ideation sketches for the modern reinterpretation of the quirky Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Shooting Brake, it’s now time for a good look behind the scenes. Thanks to its social media accounts, we have in the gallery above the initial CGI interpretation or some design sketches and the real deal. Well, sort of, since we’re dealing with the “first clay model iteration.”
It seems that Niels van Roij has enlisted the help of fellow dutchman Bas van Roomen, a coachbuilder and car restorer that has returned to clay modeling to work on the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage project. It is a nice glimpse into the hard work involved with the traditional coachbuilding process, an automotive art that was almost lost to the world if not for the small workshops such as the one we’re focusing on right now.
Of course, with examples such as the La Voiture Noire or the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail out into the open, we could argue that we’re witnessing a cool revival on the OEM level, but we still love what these little companies are capable of achieving without having access to tens of millions of dollars...
