Classic Fiat 500 Gets EV Conversion

You may have read a recent editorial we posted, where we argued that it is better to get a classic car, rip its old and dirty engine out, and fill it full of batteries to power an electric motor. You get 1960s looks, zero emissions and an utterly unique vehicle to drive around in.
Now, while the idea may not be feasible for everybody, there are those who are applying this very principle. This German Fiat 500 owner has taken the leap, and in doing so, has turned his car into something which is, dare we say it, far better than the original. It gets far better performance, a higher top speed (though it is limited to 100 km/h for obvious safety reasons), it is considerably smoother, and a much nicer experience overall.

It gets a 47 hp (35 kW) electric motor, which drives the rear wheels via the car’s standard three-speed gearbox, which has to make do without a clutch, as it would be turned to dust rather quickly, when subjected to the diesel-like torque of the electric motor. Also, the owner says it has a range of between 80 to 100 km, which is comparable any number of modern, and probably much more expensive off-the-shelf EVs, which brings us back to the point made by the aforementioned editorial.
