Classic Ferraris, huh? It’s a widely known fact that the 250 series includes the most sought-after Ferrari cars ever made. While the motorsport-inspired 250 GTO is rarer than hen’s teeth, the SWB California Spyder by Scaglietti is as elegant and classically correct as a 250 series Ferrari can be.
Every Prancing Horse aficionado will try to convince you that the short wheelbase is the most elegant of the two California Spyder siblings, and we completely agree with the general public’s point of view. There’s something about the SWB that makes it more supple, better to look at than its long-footed California sibling.

British radio personality Chris Evans acquired a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder for £5.5 million. French actor Alain Delon drove a similar model when he was dating Jane Fonda. Delon’s California Spyder sold for $15.9 million in February 2015, but this black-painted 250 GT SWB California Spyder may break the record as it heads to RM Sotheby’s Villa Erba auction.

According to estimates, you’re looking at a bucket of bolts that’s worth well over €13,000,000. In American money, that’s $14.1 million. Considering that this car is one of only 16 open-headlight SWB California Spyders ever produced, that €13 million estimate seems like an understatement from our point of view. Chassis 2505 GT is all original, beautifully restored and has a full certification from Ferrari Classiche.

This example of the California Spyder also appeared at the Ferrari Challenge World Finals in 2010, where it was paraded by none other than former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo. After that, the owner displayed his jaw-dropping 1961 250 GT SWB at the famed Museo Ferrari in Maranello. If pedigree and an unshakably solid investment is what you’re after, this retro Fezza is the right automobile for you.
