Back when Ferrari was nothing more than the name of its founder, Alfa Romeo was the golden standard of the Italian automotive industry. And in the 1930s, the 8C family of road-going and racing cars served as the pinnacle of the Italian automaker.
What all 8C models from the period have in common is the straight-eight engine design, as well as the bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful bodywork from Italy’s best coachbuilders. This particular model, an 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta, is one of only five ever made.
Recently restored with utmost attention to detail, the car received a lot of attention over the years. Presented at the 1937 Paris Motor Show, then at the Milan and Berlin shows in ’37 and ’38, the 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta in the photo gallery also appeared in the Alfa Romeo sales brochure and a number of other publications.
Fast-forward to August 2018, and the Touring Berlinetta in question has won the most important concours in the world at the Monterey Car Week in California. Winning the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is no small feat, but then again, who could say no to what Alfa Romeo and Carrozzeria Touring created on this occasion?
Also referred as Coupé Leggero, the 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta took home the coveted Best of Show award. What that means is, the owners were given an exquisite-looking trophy and a Rolex watch.
The car isn’t at its first Pebble Beach appearance, having won prizes in the past as well. Most Elegant Closed Car in 2001 is one of them. Before this year’s edition of the concours, owners David and Ginny Sydoric of Beverly Hills returned it to 1938 Berlin Motor Show specification.
As one of the most technologically-advanced automobiles of the 1930s, the 2900 features a 2.9-liter straight-eight engine that develops more than 220 horsepower thanks to a pair of Roots-type superchargers fed by two Weber carburetors. Hydraulic dampers are also featured, and if you were wondering, this work of wonder comes with independent suspension on every corner.
