Lexus is the automaker responsible for creating the car that Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson fancies the most - the LFA supercar. But the same automaker is responsible for creating the one that he finds useful only if you want to keep up with tractors or hearses while sipping fuel - the CT 200h.
Well, what would you expect, the Lexus CT 200h is pretty much a Toyota Prius with a master’s degree in design. It looks fancy and luxurious, but step on the gas and you’ll hear a small Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine annoyingly staying in high revs while the eCVT will try to get you up to speed in about 10 seconds or so.

“This, then, is a car for people who aren’t very interested in saving the planet but would quite like to save a few quid on the way to work. That’s good common sense. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a drawback with this car. It is absolutely dreadful. Worse than anything I’ve driven in a very, very long time,” Clarkson said in its review for The Sunday Times.

Despite Lexus advertising its refreshed CT being more quieter and using more insulating materials for the cabin, Jeremy still accuses it of being annoyingly noisy due to its drivetrain setup which uses a CVT.

Yeah, you get good mileage and tax benefits, but his advice is to buy a regular hatch and drive it carefully if you want good fuel economy. Our advice - well, you’ll have to wait a bit until we test it for ourselves.
