City in Romania Offered Free Bus Rides for Those Who Read While Commuting

Other than the Transfagarasan road, Nadia Comaneci, Hagi and Dracula there are not many things people know about this country, if they know anything at all. But thanks to the world wide internet, we do get fresh and cool news now and then from this rather undiscovered part of Europe. Today, we’re traveling to the East of the continent to discuss an exciting project.

Meet Victor Miron, a young writer from Cluj, the second most populous city in Romania, located in the northwestern part of the country. He and his friends believe that it’s better to promote reading by rewarding those who do it, than bragging about the ones who don’t. Sure, these days people use gizmos while commuting with the bus, so it’s rather hard to tell whether or not people are still into the practice.

Regardless, his idea is not here to create statistics, but rather to show others a different view on using a bus to go to town. Evidently, the young driver is hoping to encourage people to read more, even if they’re in a public space. In fact, he has other ongoing projects related to reading, but let’s look into this one first.

So Victor approached the city’s mayor asking him if there was any way for him to offer free rides to passengers who read books. The answer took more than a year to arrive, but it was a positive one. The little campaign ran between June 4th through 7th, and anyone who read a book on the bus rode free. Apparently, the mayor posted his proposal on his Facebook page, and the feedback was quite impressive.

Moreover, as we mentioned, this fellow is quite ambitious, as he does other reading promotion campaigns like these too. One such example would be a thing he calls Bookface. According to Victor’s post on Bored Panda, people who have a book on their Facebook profile picture receive discounts in all sorts of places, from bookstores to hair salons and even dental practices.

Wait, it gets better. Apparently, their biggest challenge is to convince Mark Zuckerberg himself to Book-face his Facebook profile.
