With all the fuss and huss surrounding Audi's historic 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans back in June, coupled with Audi e-tron's run on the famous circuit, nobody was expecting to see anything more exciting come to Le Mans anytime soon. Yet, Citroen Survolt Concept's presence at the Le Mans Classic event on July 9 managed to steal the headlines again.

Hand in hand with the other insane Citroen projects - such as the GTbyCitroen concept and a range of DS3 cars - the Survolt managed to steal the eyes of the crowd with its "charming and profound” lines as it went about its business in the hands of female racing driver Vanina Ickx.

Based on the Revolte concept presented in 2009 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Survolt showed its face for the first time at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. It came packing a pair of electric motors which propel the vehicle using the 300 hp to a top speed of 260km/h (162mph), but only after accelerating it to 100km/h from a standstill in less than five seconds.

The motors draw their power from two 140kg (309 lbs) lithium-ion batteries which give the Survolt a maximum range of 200km (124 miles). The batteries can be recharged using a special power supply in no more than two hours. When charged from a regular 220V household outlet, the time needed for a full charge reaches 10 hours.

There's no telling where Citroen's Survolt will lead in the future, but we can only dream to a time when sports cars on the roads will spell Audi e-tron, Mercedes Benz SLS AMG E-Cell and, why not, Citroen Survolt.
