Picasso, in the automotive world, doesn’t have anything to do with the Spanish painter that co-founded the Cubist movement. In Citroen’s jargon, Picasso is an indicator for a multi-purpose vehicle. But the French carmaker decided that enough is enough, which is why Picasso will bite the dust at the 88th Geneva Motor Show.
According to Group PSA, SpaceTourer identifies “a global offer made up of 3 MPVs.” But wait, there's more: “On the occasion of the Geneva Motor Show and the arrival of the new EAT8 automatic transmission, Citroen is renaming C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso into C4 SpaceTourer and Grand C4 SpaceTourer.”

Why, of all things that Citroen could’ve done to make the multi-purpose C4 range more relevant, did it decide on a rebranding? As you would expect from an automaker known for its round-the-clock quirkiness, there’s no real explanation whatsoever in this regard.

If you insist, the SpaceTourer brand “brings together under the same signature, modern and complementary products that allow to transport 5 to 9 people.” The two MPVs soldier on with EMP2 underpinnings, being offered with the same engines and options as ever before. In other words, there’s nothing particularly new about the C4 SpaceTourer and Grand C4 SpaceTourer to speak of apart from the name.

Over in France, the Citroen configurator lists the two models with their old names at the time of writing, with the C4 Picasso priced at 24,950 euros. The larger Grand C4 Picasso kicks off at 28,000 euros. In the best-equipped trim level available, which is called Shine, the two compact-sized models cost €30,950 and €32,150, respectively.

Turning our attention back to the SpaceTourer rebranding, a question must be posed. Which is the third SpaceTourer in the lineup? First of all, Citroen has a light commercial vehicle in its lineup, the Jumpy panel van. In passenger form, it is called SpaceTourer, Citroen referring to it as an MPV instead of a passenger van.

As confusing as it sounds, that’s exactly how the cookie crumbles. Even though Citroen describes it as “an MPV full of character that makes your life easier,” there’s no escaping the fact the SpaceTourer is a van with more windows and seats than the Jumpy.
