Citroen Essentielle - Low Budget Range in the Works

French carmaker Citroen is reportedly working on a whole new range of vehicles that would compete with budget models sold across Europe. Details are still sketchy but it appears the new lineup, codenamed Essentielle, will comprise Eco models featuring small-displacements engines, especially tweaked for low emissions and improved efficiency.

A report by La Tribune revealed that the first launch of such an Eco model might take place between 2010 and 2013 but the French manufacturer hasn't commented on the rumors so far.

Carsuk.net writes that the Essentielle range could be based on the C-Cactus concept displayed at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. The concept was weighing just 1,306 kg and featured a hybrid HDi drivetrain, which brought fuel consumption as low as 3.4 l/100 km and released CO2 emissions of 78 g/km.

A hybrid model wearing the Essentielle badge is again a very likely scenario, as such a green model would perfectly comply with Citroen's requirements: reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. However, it looks like the company is aiming to keep the price as low as possible so a hybrid model might add some extra bucks over the base price of the car.

As mentioned, Citroen hasn't commented on the rumors so far but the aforementioned source notes that the French manufacturer will issue an official statement in the upcoming days to announce some early details regarding the car.

At the Frankfurt Auto Show this year, Citroen presented the company's new contraption, the Revolte concept, a model also aimed at reduced fuel consumption and low emissions.
