The race to meet the at times over-ambitious goals in the field of vehicle electrification each carmaker has set for itself creates both usable vehicles, and some that make you wonder what is their purpose. It is in this latter category that Citroen’s new e-SpaceTourer falls into.
Just like most other companies in the industry did, Citroen too promised an avalanche of electrified vehicles in the coming years. So far, in 2020, the carmaker has revealed the C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid, the Ami and e-Dispatch, and the surprises are far from over.
Based on the regular SpaceTourer MPV, the electric variant of the people mover was revealed on Friday (June 12) as what seems to be a compromise between the promise in need to be kept, and a noteworthy proposition in the segment.
Packing an average-sized 50 kWh battery, the MPV offers what can certainly be considered a tiny range compared to what else is out there now, namely 143 miles (230 km). And while that may be enough to move about within a city’s limits, it can certainly cause some headaches for people planning longer family trips – after all, that’s what an MPV is for.
The more numerous stops needed to recharge the battery also translate into increased wasted time. Provided you find a 100 kW charging station, you’d have to wait around for about 30 minutes, but that time increases exponentially if you’re in no such luck: up to seven and a half hours.
The SpaceTourer itself is not exactly a top seller for the French (last year, just over 11,000 of them were sold in Europe, and given this year’s health crisis in the first six months of 2020 just under 2,000 were delivered) so we don’t expect the electric variant, especially with these specs, to fare any better,
Even so, Citroen is determined to launch it by the end of the year, accompanied by several visual changes meant to differentiate it from the ICE-powered version.
Full details on the Citroen e-SpaceTourer can be found in the press release section below.
