Citroen DS4 Gets Five-star Rating in Latest Euro NCAP Tests

The newest addition to Citroen’s DS range has just received top marks in the latest batch of crash tests from Euro NCAP. The DS4 crossover did exceptionally well in protecting its adult occupants, didn’t fair as good in collisions with pedestrians.

The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact. The DS4 scored maximum points for the protection it provided in the side barrier test, but in the more severe side pole impact, protection of the chest and abdomen areas was adequate and that of the head and pelvis was good. The seat and head restraint provided only marginal protection against whiplash injuries, so you’d better be weary of being rear-ended in the Citroen model.

The DS4 received top scores for 3-year old child protection. The front passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, the crossover only received 8.1 points out of a total 12 for 18 month old child protection.

“The switch is clearly marked and unambiguous information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag, and the system was rewarded. Permanent labels warn clearly of the dangers of using a rearward facing restraint in this seating position without first disabling the airbag,”
the safety body states.

The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians' legs, but the front edge of the bonnet was marginal or poor in most places. In most areas likely to be struck by the head of a child, the bonnet offered good protection. However, in those areas likely to be struck by an adult's head, protection was rated as poor in all areas tested, and no points were scored for this part of the assessment.

Euro NCAP was pleased with the DS4’s safety assist systems, giving them a 97 percent rating. The standard ESP was four to be satisfactory, which is always good to know in a crossover. There is a seatbelt reminder system for the driver, front passenger and rear seats. A driver-set speed limitation device is also standard equipment on the DS4.
