Citroen DS4: French Chic

There used to be a time when French cars were the epitomy of chic and good taste. When the original ‘goddess’ was launched some 55 years ago, the vehicle was so ahead of its time that it made just about every car on the road look bland and boring.

Citroen has released the second video of the “behind the scenes” series, called “French chic”, which tries to bring back some of that long-lost luster to the forefront of customers’ attention. According to Thomas Leret, Citroen’s Colors & Materials Stylist, the aim was to create a car with a bespoke luxury feel. Thus, the team took inspiration from jewelry, clockwork and leatherwork.

The aim was to make it feel different without being too ostentatious. Where the clip goes a bit astray is when some some execs try to explain that the car mixes German rigor and Latin character. The DS3 tells us enough about what its crossover big brother will be like, so it doesn’t need any of this publicity.

Thankfully, from then on, we hear the word “French” just about every 3 seconds in the video. The inspiration for the interior leatherwork comes from emblematic models of the past, like the convertible SM. Having an interior covered in cow hide and signature door sills is nothing now for any carmaker, but the those seats that look like “the six-packs of guys who work out”.... we’ve never heard that description.

“Compact and muscular, the DS signature on the bonnet is complemented by a striking LED light signature around the front fog lights. The LEDs are illuminated both day and night. The eye-catching profile, featuring a chrome-finished waistline surrounding dark tinted windows, is enhanced by muscular wheel arches - that emphasize the large wheels (up to 19") - and is crowned by a tautly drawn roofline with a spoiler for added vitality. The lower part of the rear bumper is finished in chrome and the horizontal detailing on the rear light clusters highlights their innovative boomerang design,” Citroen says.
