We will not try and hide our dislike for the DS4 or the whole DS family of car. While its MPV big brother, the DS5, does make a bit of sense, though not at BMW 3 Series money, the DS4 is downright bad.
Supposedly, its both sportier than the C4 and also a crossover with increased ground clearance. They didn't pull it off. It's also quite expensive, not that interesting to look at, doesn't have a good automatic and worst of all the windows don't roll down in the back. Yes, that piece of glass in the rear doors is fixed, like on a van. This for a car that starts at €22,000 in France and gets you a 1.6-liter VTi 120 engine and a 5-speed manual.
But if there's one thing Citroen is good at, it's reinventing its design. The French carmaker has started aggressively targeting wealthy Chinese customers and has recently launched a bespoke sedan called the DS 5LS there. It has a distinct front end that's not seen on European models and is soon to be adopted by two other cars, including the first DS SUV based on the Wild Rubis Concept.
If Citroen ever decided to updated the DS4 compact, its looks will reflect the Chinese market trend. A large chrome grille with its edges converging towards the center creates an futuristic design line. Changes to the car will probably also include the headlights in order to take advantage of LED technology, which even Peugeot is trying to offer as standard.
It's definitely not our cup of tea, but nothing can possibly make the DS4 worse, so will take it.
