French carmakers are make either cars that are a lot more original or a lot less original for the sake of being cheaper. The Citroen C4 Cactus is a car that stick with you after you see it because it's somehow both.
Its makes say their new product is not any ordinary crossover, it's an answer to many questions and problems modern consumers have. They basically say the market has changed and nobody else has noticed yet – new ideas for a new world. Sounds simple, but it isn't.
We caught up with Citroen's C4 Cactus and are now able to bring you the first real life photos of the car. In some parts, the spirit of the 2CV becomes evident. This car is designed to be very light and relatively cheap. It will probably never be available with AWD and its components are limiting it to about 180 km/h. Anything going over that speed has to have more expensive tires, stronger suspension and bigger engines.
And yet what the end consumers are getting is more, not less. "Oh look another scratch on the door from parking way to close at Ikea" – that will never happen with the Cactus because it's got rubber bumpers. It also comes in fantastically bold color combinations, with neon orange and deep purple to name but a few, and has a back-to-basic interior with enough going on for you not to feel like you're in economy car.
