Citroen C4 Cactus Crash Tested, Gets 4 Euro NCAP Stars

Similar to what the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does for the American motorist, Euro NCAP is a European car safety performance assessment programme that's sole target is to find out just how much protection does a new vehicle offer. In the latest round of tests, Euro NCAP totaled a few examples of the Citroen C4 Cactus for safety's sake.

Although Citroen dubbed the C4 Cactus as being a small family car, the French contraption is more of an unconventional crossover thingy than a true family-oriented machine. Nevertheless, it's far-out nature attracted numerous fans, while some voices hint that the unusual styling renders it unsafe in an accident.

Well sorry to burst your bubble folks, but the Citroen C4 Cactus is a 4-star vehicle according to the Euro NCAP's rigorous testing procedures. Keep in mind that this thing weighs just 965 kilograms (2,127 lbs) in 1.2 Feel configuration. Then consider it has been crashed at 64 km/h (40 mph) head-on into a barrier.

Wonder why the Citroen C4 Cactus hasn't earned the highly coveted 5-star Euro NCAP rating? As it's often the case with cheap Euro boxes, the C4 Cactus fell short mainly due to the dearth of driver assistance systems one might find on a more upmarket model.

Just to name the most important fails during a crash situation, the Citroen C4 Cactus isn't providing good protection for the knees of the driver and passenger in a frontal accident. In a side impact situation, the C4 Cactus apparently offered great protection for all areas of the dummy's body except for the chest.
