Citroen 2CV Receives BMW Motorcycle Engines in the UK

From iconic or cute to plain old, you can call the Citroen 2CV many things, but you definitely can’t praise if for its power. “2CV” means 2 HP in French and, on many occasions, this is how the little car feels. Fret not, dynamic driving fans, a British aftermarket developer called Sparrow Motors has decided to put BMW motorcycle engines in the 2CV.

This isn’t one of those crazy projects that sees the little Citroen gifted with a zillion horsepower. Oh no, things were kept at a reasonable level. The aim here was to make the car quicker while keeping drivability and reliability at a reasonable level,

You can choose between having your 2CV gifted with an 850 cc or an 1200 cc BMW R-Series Motorrad unit, which means you’ll be enjoying an oil-cooled Boxer engine. Opting for the first powerplant brings 70 hp to your right foot, while the second sees the car treating you with 125 hp, but there are also power options that slot in between the two aforementioned values.

Further down the power line, you can have standard 2CV transmissions from the late models or 4-/5-speed Citroen GS/A gearbox units featuring a Citroen Visa 652cc bell housing.

These British 2CV aficionados took a car with a 95 hp engine to Mallory Park last year, with the resulting performance being respectable, especially considering the down-to-earth nature of the project. If you want to talk figures, we’ll mention the 9-second 0 to 100 km/h (96 mph) spring and the 160+ km/h (100+ mph) top speed.

As a... slow reminder, a standard Citroen 2CV would probably struggle to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) free of any time constraints.
