After Toyota and Nissan expanded their recalls of Takata airbag-equipped vehicles, the Japanese company came clean and told the NHTSA: “you know, some 33.8 million are actually affected worldwide.” As if this wasn’t enough to make some shareholders soil their underpants, FCA is announcing the airbag inflator recall affects over 5 million of its vehicles.
Considering that the affected vehicle pool comes from the 2003 to 2011 model years, it goes without saying some of these vehicles are no longer on our roads. Blame crashes, car crushers and other natural attritions that apply to these vehicles. Speaking of which, curious about the exact tally? 5,224,845 vehicles. Here’s a list of a campaign that affects a global population of 4,747,202 units from the grand total:
- 2004-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups
- 2005-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 pickups
- 2006-2009 Dodge Ram 3500 pickups
- 2007-2009 Dodge Ram 3500 cab chassis vehicles
- 2008-2010 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 cab chassis vehicles
- 2008-2009 Sterling 4500 and 5500 cab chassis vehicles
- 2004-2008 Dodge Durango full-size SUVs
- 2005-2010 Chrysler 300, 300C and SRT8 full-size sedans
- 2005-2010 Dodge Charger full-size sedans
- 2005-2010 Dodge Magnum full-size station wagons
- 2005-2011 Dodge Dakota small pickups
- 2006-2011 Mitsubishi Raider small pickups
The previously mentioned nameplates are equipped with defective Takata driver’s side airbag inflators. This action supersedes an ongoing NHTSA-approved recall involving the same nameplates and expands the affected global population by an estimated 1,407,338 vehicles, with the addition of model years 2008 to 2011. Airbag inflators replaced in the former campaign will again require service.
Thankfully though, FCA states that it’s “unaware of any related injuries or accidents involving the newly affected vehicles.” A second recall campaign to which FCA US is committed to replacing Takata front-passenger airbags in the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups is affecting an estimated 437,947 vehicles are located in the US.
According to official documentation, “certain Takata airbag inflators may deploy with excessive force, sending debris into the vehicle cabin. Vehicle age and consistent exposure to high absolute humidity are believed to factor into such deployments.” FCA US is aware of one related injury involving a 2006 Dodge Charger in Florida.
On an ending note, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles models are no longer produced with either of the suspect airbags. The components are distinct from Takata airbags cited in fatalities involving other automakers.
