Chrysler to Borrow Fiat Engine Technology

Chrysler is keen on improving its fuel-efficient models and to do so, it started developing new eco engines that borrow a lot of technology from Fiat.

The Italian automaker has a reputation for building small engines and one example is the 500 model. The former Fiat executive and current head of Chrysler powertrain, Paolo Ferrero, explains that work has already began on developing and manufacturing a series of engines, ranging from petrol ones to diesels, hybrids and electric vehicles. He also explains that with the help of new transmissions, fuel economy will improve exponentially.

MultiAir technology from Fiat is known for its improved engine combustion and in the near future, this technology will be incorporated in Chrysler’s new four-cylinder eco engines. The American’s automaker new engine line will also feature turbocharged powerplants bearing Fiat technology.

The American carmaker assures clients that in the near future, all its models will be offered with at least a 6-speed automatic gearbox, and some models even will feature eight or nine gearboxes.

Fiat 500’s MultiAir engine will be also available for most of Chrysler’s models. "Chrysler has to have as many standout attributes as they can given that their historic profile has been more downmarket," said analyst Joe Phillippi of AutoTrends Consulting Inc. according to The Detroit News. “A minivan with a nine-speed transmission will generate good buzz for them,” added Phillippi.

Chrysler's first plan to improve fuel economy for their models is to introduce Fiat’s dry dual clutch on the 200 model. Next year the American automaker intends to launch a hybrid version for their 300 model, while their first electric vehicle is set to be a model based on the Fiat 500. Ferrero explained that the dry dual clutch technology is going to be incorporated in a new Dodge compact car set to replace the Caliber next year.
