Chrysler Starts Production of Minivans in Canada

With plans to kill one of the two minivans in the lineup in 2013 already unveiled by Chrysler CEO Sergion Marchionne, the American manufacturer announced this week that, for now, production of both the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country had begun at the car maker's Windsor Assembly Plant (WAP) in Canada.

The Canadian plant, recipient of a major investment, is already on a roll, having experienced a growth in production of over 60 percent in 2010. The addition of the 2011 model year minivans is expected to help the plant grow even more.

“The new 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country remain key parts of our revival plan,”
said Marchionne at the plant. “Our collective future is dependent on the success of this plant and these vehicles. We’re in this battle together. We must continue to put our trust in each other and make a true, full-faith effort to work together.”

The new Grand Caravan, presented in the last months of 2010, will be launched onto the market with a single engine, the 3.6l Pentastar V6 (283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque). It will be available in four trim levels (Express, Mainstreet, Crew and the R/T), with the higher trim dubbed by Dodge the ultimate man van.

The Town & Country model shares the same engine with the Caravan, with accents and cues taken from other Chrysler models, like the 300.

"This is a proud day for Chrysler Group and the CAW as it launches two new minivans, thereby preserving good manufacturing jobs in Canada,” added CAW president Ken Lewenza.
