Chrysler Sales in November 2014 Weren’t Enough to Beat Ford or General Motors

Finally, time has come to tell you how the Fiat-Chrysler consortium fared in terms of vehicles moved in November. As expected from the Italo-American automotive group, November is the 56th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains, but there were a few notable disappointing results as well.

Chrysler Group LLC today reported that it had sold 170,839 automobiles in November, which represents a 20 percent increase compared with sales in November 2013 (142,275 units), and the best November since 2001. All FCA brands posted year-over-year gains compared to November 2013.

Although Ram Truck’s 31 percent increase was the largest gain of any Fiat-Chrysler brand and the brand’s best November since 2003, CEO Reid Bigland was impressed by the Chrysler 200. “Sales of our all-new Chrysler 200 sedan were up a strong 155 percent in November.” Bigland noted. Any other noteworthy detail?

Well, yes. The recently introduced Alfa Romeo 4C moved 24 units the former month, while the Fiat 500 sold 1,984 examples compared to the 2,138 moved in November 2013. Despite a lot of criticism over reliability, the family-oriented 500L posted the best volume increase for Fiat, which moved 3,111 cars in total this November.

Chrysler’s November sales are up 30 percent, the brand’s best November since 2007. Even more impressive is that sales of the Chrysler 300 increased 18 percent last month, despite the full-size sedan spawned a 2015 model year facelift at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Only the Town & Country minivan posted a 29 percent drop in sales (8,055 vs 11,288 units sold in November 2013). Overall, the brand enjoys a 30 percent sales gain over November 2013.

Jeep brand sales were up 27 percent thanks to 57,489 vehicles moved compared, translating to the SUV maker’s best sales performance ever in the month of November. While the Jeep Cherokee, Wrangler and Patriot each logged their best ever November sales, the Cherokee was the brand’s highest-volume seller for the third consecutive month with 16,945 units sold.

As for Dodge, November 2014 vs November 2013 saw the most valuable manufacturer in the Fiat-Chrysler portfolio move an extremely disappointing 42,108 cars. The Journey and Dart posted the best volume changes over November 2013, but the Caravan moved the most examples (8,842) out of all models. 45 Vipers were sold compared to 41 the same month last year, but here’s a truly shocking fact - Avenger sales slumped 89 percent from 4,887 in November 2013 to 540 units the last month.

Last but not least, sales of the Ram pickup truck were up 21 percent in November, the workhorse’s best ever November sales. While Ram 1500 sales increased 30, HD truck sales were up only 3 percent compared to the same month last year. Including the Ram ProMaster van and Ram Cargo Van, Ram Truck sales are up 31 percent, translating to the brand’s best November sales in 11 years. Moreover, both the ProMaster and Cargo Van recorded their best ever monthly sales.
