Chrysler Recalls 284,831 Minivans Due to Fire Risk

The current year has proven to be a difficult year for Chrysler minivans, as the vehicles are now involved in the second major recall campaign in 2010.As we reported, over 355,500 2005-2006 Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans registered in the U.S. and Canada were involved in a recall campaign back in February, due to an airbag sensor issue.

The action was scheduled to start this month, but it seems like Chrysler will have even more work to do, as the company has issued another hefty recall. This time, Chrysler is recalling 284,831 2008 and 2009 model year Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans due to a wiring issue that can lead to a fire.

Certain vehicles manufactured from February through September 2007 are suspected to have been built with an improperly routed wire harness. The harness’s position may allow the lower sliding door hinge bracket to make contact and wear through the wire insulation.

Should the wear reach a certain level, a short circuit may occur inside the sliding door, overheating the latch, with the event potentially causing a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners, with the safety recall scheduled to begin during the course of the present month. The company’s dealers will fix the involved vehicles free of charge.

If you own a Chrysler Town & Country or a Dodge Grand Caravan manufactured between February and September 2007, you can contact Chrysler by using a special toll-free number: 1-800-853-1403.
