Chrysler has announced that it will be recalling approximately 190,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs from the 2011 model year due to a faulty fuel pump relay that could cause the vehicles to stall or be left stranded. This is the third recall for each vehicle so far this year.
All of the affected 2011 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs were produced at Chrysler’s Jefferson North Assembly plant in Detroit, MI between Jan. 5, 2010 and July 20, 2011, and they are equipped with either the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 or the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. The defective fuel pump relay is housed inside the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7), and the problem was traced back to excessive heat inside the module that can cause a contact spring to overheat and deform.
If this happens, it could lead to either a permanent or intermittent problem of the vehicle stalling or not starting. Of course, if the vehicle stalls while driving, it could potentially lead to a crash. Chrysler did specify whether or not there have been any accidents or injuries associate with this problem. To remedy the situation, dealers will install a “new, more robust” fuel pump relay that is located externally of the TIPM-7 to reduce ambeint temperatures and prevent further spring deformation.
According to the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice, the recall will begin on October 24th, but affected customers wanting more information can contact either the Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline by calling 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visiting the www.safercar.gov website.
